From September 1st 2021 a new reform of the parental allowance (Elterngeld) has come into force and it brings good news for parents and future parents.
The first change regards the duration of parental allowance for parents of premature babies. The reform stipulates that they will be able to receive Elterngeld for longer in the future. For how longer they will receive the funding depends on how premature the baby was born.
The second change regards the extension of the hours of the parents’ part-time job while receiving Elterngeld. The weekly allowed work increased from 30 to 32 hours per week.
The requirements for the “partnership bonus” (Partnershaftbonus), in the case that both parents work, also relaxed. The bonus increased from 25-30 to 24-32 hours. Despite the name, the bonus can be received by couples as well as by single parents.
Last, but not least, income limits for couples will be adjusted. Couples with an income of more than 300,000 euros yearly will no longer receive Elterngeld in the future. This limit was previously 500,000 euros. The limit for single parents remains unchanged at 250,000 euros.
